Why abdominal or belly breathing is so good for you

Breathing exercises that move the diaphragm upwards and downwards produce a dual cleansing effect: above they squeeze the lungs and free them from any stale air lurking in the bottom lobes. Below they encourage the peristalsis to cleanse the intestines and so start the gradual cleansing in the body.

As a result of the diaphragm moving up and down, other organs such as the stomach, liver, gall bladder and pancreas are massaged as they should be so that they function properly.
