Finding out what type you are

Yoga is so much more fun than any other form of exercise and has many paths you can wander down and explore. And one of the keys to life is knowing yourself. In yoga, there are three different types of energy swilling about the universe. As we are in essence pure energy, you will be made up of all three. Whether you have a dominant type determines what kind of person you are. An ideal person has a perfect balance of all three.

The three different doshas (or energies) are kapha, pitta and vata. You could also be a combination of two. I am more of a kapha person which means that my favourite journey is from the bed to the fridge and back. I read recently a perfect description of me - 'prefers to be lazy but is very hard working'.

These are the qualities in very basic terms:
  • A kapha type is quite sturdy, curved and strong. A nurturing type who is an earth mother. Likes to feed and look after everyone. Slow to get going, but once unleashed does a thorough job. Things may not look differently externally, but inside the cupboard it will be immaculate.
  • A vata type is often tall, thin and prone to dry skin (all that wind drying them out). Creative and imaginative, they can often be distracted to other things. Not sure what their cupboard cleaning skills are like.
  • A pitta type is fiery and often red haired. They can flare up in anger. If they are cleaning it is fast and furious. Everything looks immaculate - but inside the cupboard it might not be the same. I say this because my partner is a pitta and our cleaning skills are very different. As you can imagine, I prefer it when he does the housework and I do the spring clean. Not that it happens much with my tendency to laziness.
There are loads of online quizzes. Why not try this one to start with and find out which type you are and what type of food and activities you should be doing to get the right balance.
I know I need more fire in my belly!
